Risks of Not Having Auto Insurance
You don’t have an option if you are a New Jersey driver; you must
carry a New Jersey auto insurance policy that at least meets minimums
set forth by the Basic state plan. If you don’t, it is easy to be
caught – the government compares registrations and insurance policies
on a regular basis to catch those not carrying insurance. Just a single
offense means that you’ll pay a $300 fine, have your license suspended
for up to a year, and have to perform community service! If you’ve been
caught before, subsequent fines are even harsher – a $500 fine, 14 days
in jail, community service, and loss of your license for up to two
years.
In addition, by not carrying insurance, you’re putting yourself at
financial risk. Even if you don’t care if you damage your car, remember
that medical bills are expensive, as is personal property. Your auto
insurance looks out for the other drivers on the road, not just
you!
