DWI Statistics
In 2006, there were 771 traffic fatalities in New Jersey. Of these
deaths, 285 of them were alcohol related – so, 37% of all deaths
involved alcohol. Now, keep in mind that some of these deaths were
intoxicated pedestrians who walked in front of traffic and other such
non-DUI related deaths. However, the vast majority of the 285 deaths
were caused by those in New Jersey who were drunk driving.
Note that the New Jersey drunk driving statistics are about average for
the United States. In the entire country, of the 42,532 deaths, about
37% of them were related to alcohol. That means that someone dies from
an alcohol-related car accident every 39 minutes, on average. 306 of
the deaths were children under the age of 14, with about half of them
being children who were riding in a car with a drunk driver.
