Speeding Ticket Fines
Penalties for a New Jersey speeding ticket start with points on your
license. The points system is a way to track bad drivers, and when you
accumulate too many points, you lose your license and are forced to pay
additional fines. In many cases, speeding is combined with reckless
driving or other violations, so be aware that your points (and, in
turn, fines) will increase the more dangerously you’re driving
On top of the points you’ll receive, you’ll also be responsible for
paying hefty fines if you’re caught speeding in New Jersey. Recently,
New Jersey increased some highway speed limits to 65 miles per hour,
and in these areas fines for speeding are almost double. You can also
expect higher fines for speeding in construction zones or other posted
“safe corridors.” The starting point for your fine is as follows:
- Exceeding the speed limit by 1 – 9 miles per hour: $77
- Exceeding the speed limit by 10 – 14 miles per hour: $87
- Exceeding the speed limit by 15 – 19 miles per hour: $97
- Exceeding the speed limit by 20 – 24 miles per hour: $192
- Exceeding the speed limit by 25 – 29 miles per hour: $212
- Exceeding the speed limit by 30 – 34 miles per hour: $232
- Exceeding the speed limit by 35 – 39 miles per hour: $252
- Exceeding the speed limit by over 40 miler per hour: $272
Again, fines will be higher if you also break other laws, such as
driving without a license or running a red light. In addition, you may
have to pay court fees and processing fees, which can increase your
fine by hundreds of dollars – thousands of dollars in some cases, if
you hire a lawyer to represent you. Keep in mind that your insurance
premium will probably increase as well!
